Ive seen the same symptoms before in a different scenario, before I started 
using slimserver.... The APE decoder process is supposed to produce WAV 
output on stdout. If it is also producing something else on stdout, perhaps a 
welcome text message, then this would be inserted into the pcm data producing 
a spike before (or very near the start of) the real audio data.

Ive never used APE, so Im not sure how or why this could happen in your case.
