Well I had fun testing this in a completely unscientific way. I set my
speakers and amp in the perfect position to get a good stereo image,
while being able to have my hand on the analog volume control. With SB
remote in the other hand I could go back and forth between getting to
highest volume with analog attenuater in one hand, digital attenuater
in the other. Eg, set volume at #40 on SB to coorelate with Pat
Metheny's guitar being earbustingly loud- Then adjusting both
simultaneously to change digital volume to #35 while upping analog
volume to keep the guitar approximately as 'ear busting' as before.

Unfortunately my amp isn't powerful enough to get me below #30 setting
being full volume without obvious distortion introduced by the amp. In
the range I was able to cover with my equipment, the quality was not
affected by digital attenuation. I suspect having the #30 attenuation
on the SB (3/4 volume), act as your maximum volume setting would have
negative consequences, but I don't have the equipment, knowledge, or
able bodied person to help conduct experiments, so ignore this if
deemed necessary..

I'd love to hear how others did tests, with equipment or just
unstructured listening though.
