I took a long hard look at the Olive recently before deciding to go with Squeezebox, and my thinking was much along the lines of davep's. I've bought a wireless SB3, a wired SB2, and a 250GB LinkStation (to hold the music and run slimserver) all for a total of about $700, which is far less than either of the Olive machines. Even after I add a 3rd SB/room the outlay will be less than a single Olive Musica. I suspect that for some the all-in-one aspect of the Olive (at least until you start streaming to other rooms) appeals to many people. I don't do that much critical listening, but I'm still happier keeping the noisy bits (the LinkStation's disk and fan) down in the basement, where you can't hear it over the furnace anyway. And given the relatively small capacity of the Olive boxes, for most people (especially those ripping to lossless formats) an additional storage point will have to come into the picture sooner or later anyway, negating Olive's all-in-one advantage. Final selling points for the SB were the non-proprietary, open source orientation of SlimDevices, and the active user base. Bottom line: the price of the Olive scared me away, but I would say now that I would still go with the SB even if money weren't an issue. Your Mileage (and/or Money) May Vary. -Ken -- aubuti ------------------------------------------------------------------------ aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21135 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
