I don't understand. I was in the local CompuSA store yesterday and they had Seagate 200GB disks for $35 each. The Slimserver will easily handle collections on multiple disks. I use three drives for my collection, and have been for nearly three years. If you have 2K CDs, you have $20K worth of music. It is trivial to have FLAC put a CD under 300MB, so you get 3 CDs per gigabyte. (probably closer to 4). 2000/3 = 700 GB, so you need two big 500GB disks or four at 200. If you think RAID is important and worthwhile, double it. [I do not think RAID is useful in this space, but that is another thread] The key question to engineer your storage is not whether MP3 256k or 320k is smaller, but what is the savings in disk space, and is that important. The savings from PCM to FLAC to MP3-high quality is not about the disk space. I use FLAC over WAV/pcm mostly for tagging and organization, you can't tag PCM files. Getting smaller files is just a cool side benefit. For me, the anaylsis is trivial. The 'cost' of putting music on my SlimServer is handling the CDs (and LPs). The disk cost is lost in the noise. I never want to touch the CDs again. So FLAC lets me do that.
