i don't have personal experience with the M-audio Transit yet (going to
borrow one from a friend), but i've done some research and it seems the
quality of the digital output is compromised by being powered by the USB
bus, which is very noisy and not low in impedance. 

OTOH i know someone who has very lightly modified his M-Audio
Audiophile PCI card (just added some supply bypass caps), and he feels
that its digital output is very clearly superior to his (very very
expensive) EMM Labs CD/SACD transport. for those not familiar with EMM
Labs, "EM" stands for Ed Meitner, a man behind the engineering of a lot
of professional recording gear as well as DSD/SACD technology... his
gear is used by Sony for professional demos and is considered
no-compromise. 

where the Squeezebox fits into this i don't know, also going to try
this out eventually... i think if you use a good power supply and
modify the digital output circuit a bit, it would be very, very good.
