Welcome, John! Because I'm slightly star-struck :), I won't belabor the point, but why aren't you using FLAC or some other lossless codec? I'm sure others besides myself would like to know whether YOU, of all the golden ears out there, could put some of these issues to rest by testing for differences between lossless codecs and lower bitrate lossy formats. Just a suggestion!
