I think you miss-understand the purpose of the plots: the noise floor
indicates the level of jitter in the signal.  The 'sidebands' at -120db
are part of the J-test signal.  That's why I said that it's the
-comparison- and not the -absolute- that's important!

So it's not a question of hearing noise at >170dB down, but rather of
hearing the effects of the jitter that the J-test signal is designed to
expose!
