Here is what I use on my PC (through an external soundcard that costs more than the Squeezebox). It is a VERY cheap and compact but good quality solution.
Sonic Impact T-Amp; Pair of JBL Control 1 monitor speakers You could pick up the whole lot for about $130. Even with the T-amp turned up to just 10 o'clock there is plenty of volume for medium sized rooms.
