CarlOtto -- I went down much the same path as you in terms of building a media server PC with a high-end sound card. However, one thing I discovered along the way that may concern you is that SoftSqueeze does not seem to play back a bit-perfect stream. I did a simple test where I played back a 5.1 DTS FLAC file into a surround sound processor. When I did this with 'digitial output fixed' set on my SB2 and my SB3, the file decoded properly and I got surround sound. When I tried this with SoftSqueeze running on XP, no matter how I set up the volume and sound drivers, the file wouldn't decode and I would just get white noise. I also tried SoftSqueeze on my Mac and had the same problem. As an additional test, I tried a standalone player on both platforms (foobar2000 on XP and Cog on Mac) and was able to sucessfully decode/play back the same FLAC file locally (i.e. it's not some configuration problem with the PC or Mac).
So, it seems that somewhere in SoftSqueeze the bitstream is getting mangled. (Actually, I'm guessing it has nothing to do with this otherwise excellent product, but may be in the Java Sound code that is incorporated into the product). I posted a request last year, but Richard has been too busy with other bugs to address this yet. I haven't tried this test with any of the other players. Anyway, just thought you would want to know this before you went any further... I now use my media server PC as a dedicated slimserver appliance for my SB2/Bryston BP25 DAC and SB3/Headroom Desktop DAC systems and am very satisfied.
