I have a squeezebox that is run into a dac1 and then straight into my power amp - Personally, I use the volume knob on the dac1 (sb spdif set to fixed), but you could use the digital volume control on the sb easily as well. Depends on your preference. The sb has a remote which is convenient. I tend to prefer the sound with the dac1 volume control (just a preference, your mileage may vary). Before I got the dac1 I ran the amp straight off the sb (RCA) with the digital volume control.
