The one I use was totally "plug and play" ! - I think it is this one(http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=PW00187&N=411)
and yes it is linear (and very heavy!!!!) I don't think (personally) this is anything to do with jitter.
