Wow !, what a year !, after initially purchasing a SB to "evaluate" it
for possible in vehicle use ( with MP3's etc) I tried a FLAC rip quite
casually on my old home system , including an Audiolab 8000A amp which
you folks in the US might have heard of :) and was immediately
impressed despite not listening intently or anything as I wasn't
expecting a great deal.
Now after getting hold of some Spendor S5E's and listening , still with
the SB3 Analog o/p's to the system, can it get any better if I get a
Benchmark DAC1 ?
I have recently subscribed to the Audio Critic ezine and was much
impressed by the review of the Benchmark in wholly objective terms,
with real instrumentation to measure the results ( just like UK hi-fi
mags in the dear dead days of the 1970's )instead of vague subjective
terms to "feel" the music. In this very review it was pointed out the
tendency these days to ascribe a "sound" to CD players , amps, cables
etc when in fact the only component that could so do was the
loudspeaker/room acoustic/recording - I was slightly shocked to read in
some UK forum recently for some cult amplifier when someone asserted
that if you went to a dealer and enquired what the system component to
change for a different sound and he said the speakers, he was lying !
Any responses hostile or otherwise gratefully appreciated !
