I just got the latest Sterophile Newsletter and once again it features a
music server - this time it is the ReQuest, which I admit to never
having heard of. At $3,500 for the server unit including a 250Gb HDD
it seems awful expensive to do pretty much the same as my SB3 + PC
does. And that $3,500 does not get you a screen - it would seem you
use the TV screen or add your own LCD.

Several features mirror the Slimserver/SB3 offering, including things
like control from a handheld PPC and remote access over the internet,
though this appears to be via ReQuests own network somehow - not clear
what the security arrangements are for this.

The box includes a CD drive and Flac is supported, but the statement
that CDs can be ripped in 2-3 minutes does not suggest a great degree
of error checking goes on.

Audio quality via the on-board DAC was felt to be equivalent of using
and external MF X-DACv3.

I presume the software is closed source so no chance for the sort of
neat plugins which have seriously enhanced my SB experience. Looks
like another data point in the Sonos territory.
