I think if you want the SB to sound "as good as" or "better than" the 506 you will need a DAC...and a good one too! Although as I recall the 506 is quite "soft" (ie not like a Naim, say) in its presentation...but I rather liked it. The MF DAC might work for you - there are some similarities in general "sound". Alternatively, one of these "NOS" dacs might work.
