Just a follow-up:

I will exchange my SB3 to get the analog noise issue cleared up.

I've also discovered that my DAC has problems on the digital input that
I was using with the SB3. I don't know if the problem was there before
or if the SB3 caused the problem, but I've been able to reproduce the
locking problem when I plug other components into that digital input.

It doesn't matter what's plugged into my Digital Coax #5 input (I
completely disconnected the SB3 for testing). I think it has something
to do with internal heat - if I decode a signal on Coax 5 for about an
hour and then cycle the DAC into standby and then back to "on", it will
then be unable to lock onto any digital signal.

If I power it all down and wait about half an hour, everything works as
expected again. The other digital inputs don't have this problem. I
could test the SB3's digital coax output on another digital input on my
DAC but I'm worried that it might fry out the next digital input.

Again, I don't know that the SB3 really was to blame, but I'm not going
to take any chances. It stands to reason though - since there seems to
be a problem in the hardware with analog out, perhaps it also sent some
garbage that slightly fried Coax 5 on my DAC.

Luckily my DAC is still covered under warranty so it'll be off to the
shop soon.

And when the replacement SB3 arrives I'll probably stick to its optical
out just to be safe.
