Actually, after exploring the jriver media software, I found that you can set the transcoding to one of several filetypes and sizes (I chose mp3 128 bit), and it is seamless and VERY fast syncing with the ipod. It is also "wife friendly" as she plugs it in and it syncs automatically, transcoding on the fly. It also syncs photos to the ipod, which she loves too.
