Pure speculation here, but I would have guessed that muting the analog out would likely not have as much (at all?) of an effect on the Toslink out. Muting the analog out is essentially lowing the power demands of the power supply and reducing any EMI being generated by the analog circuitry...but since Toslink is optical, perhaps its not affected by these things?
