I've ripped my entire collection (even if was certain never to play someting again in my life) to flac, which was quite a lot of work even using three pc's simultaneously. With about 500+ albums it comes down to about 120 gigs. For modern hdd's its not so much a problem but (certainly if one of your reasons is degrading cd's over time) you have to consider the fact that you have to have a backup too on a different disk and that you have to have the disciplin/method to maintain the backup as your collection changes. Modern harddisks will still one day say to you : 'Me, a hard disk? I think not! I'm a bit of clicking metal.'
