I doubt this would be possible, if all you are removing is the DAC portion then there is no way they would be able to half the price of the unit. I'd guess that the most expensive individual components are the twin VFD screens and the case itself. Along with packaging, logistics, cost of engineering, etc. I'd be surprised if they could take $200 off the price for a huge reduction in fuctionality.
