I took a look at that one on eBay, and from the pictures can see that
the transport and DAC/preamp are connected with some sort of multi-way
cable, which is probably proprietory. I tried searching the web for
more info, but couldn't find any. I bet that one of the connectors
inside that cable carries an SPDIF signal, or possibly I2S. It may well
be that there is a clock input on the transport so that the master clock
is from the DAC. Have you thought about contacting Meridian to ask if
there's any way you can feed an SPDIF signal into the 207 DAC?

Just a guess, but the digital output might possibly be intended to
supply a pair of digital speakers (eg. Meridian 6000).
