I just re-ripped my collection a couple weeks ago. Granted mine is
only ~350 CDs or so. Last time I ripped them to MP3 it took two
months, but this time I ripped them to FLAC in less than one week
using two PC's with three CD drives I built from spare parts just for
the purpose. If I had known it wouldn't take so long I wouldn't have
put it off for so long. In the end I think there were two factors
that made this go 'round so much easier and they may apply to you as
well...

1 - The first time I ripped everything with CDEX I had it save a local
copy of all the cddb information. This time almost every CD I popped
in immediately came up with the previously cleansed local cddb info
that I had already fixed all the spelling and capitalization errors
in. That saved me a TON of time. It's not perfect, however, since I
have done some tag cleanup over the years since ripping, but mostly
that's just genre's and a few artist names so it won't be difficult to
fix again. I can use my old MP3 files to compare to the new flac
files where necessary.

2 - Compressing to flac is so much faster than compressing to MP3. I
vaguely remember last time it would take 5-10 minutes or longer to
convert the files to MP3 after the rip was done. This time I had EAC
initiate the flac compression on each track as it was ripping the
next. Most of the time the flac conversion was be done long before
the next track was ripped. The final track conversion would be done
even before I could put the CD back in the jewel case. Keep in mind
that one of the machines I used this time is actually the same I used
last time so improved CPU speeds didn't even factor in (and the second
machine I used is even slower).
