Folks,
I omitted to add some context when I cross-posted the jitter specs
summarized by Christine here.
I too was initially having a figure around 50ps as good acceptable
jitter but was confused and felt let down reading the 321ps jitter from
Stereophile's review. But, as it has, already transpired in the
conversation here (thanks largely to Mike), these figures result from
two different ways/points of measurement.
My own hearing (an analog like sound, edge-free, reminding me of my
MMF-5 the moment it was plugged in) and reports of good sound with
SB3 transport point to a low jitter. And this summary indeed shows it
is low (JA explicitly mentions this). Since these specs are for a
complete player, we dont know how good the S/PDIF output is (as
suspected by PhilNYC) in each player. Jitter could have been attenuated
in the Dac section of these players. But it is safe to assume that the
SB3's jitter is in the ballpark of high-end transports. No wonder JA,
thought it was as good as the Ayre.
Still, I feel some high-end transports might beat it (but at what cost
?). This is not a big deal for me as I am a value-conscious customer
rather than a cutting-edge high-end buyer.
