...well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? I was hesitant that I wouldn't hear a difference on my system, but I can. I played some tracks I know very well and I could definitely hear a difference. For some reason I'm especially sensitive in the high frequency region, and I heard very subtle things I had not heard before there. A light cymbal tip-tap in the middle of a very loud passage that had been drowned out before, etc. I even thought I heard some unwanted noise in the recording in terms of very, very high frequencies right at the limit of my hearing that I have never noticed before.
I'm able to switch back and forth from analogue to digital very quickly, so just for kicks I tried the DAC out against a consumer-level DAC, a Cirrus Logic CS4382. Definitely clearer, subtle HF features that suddenly appear, fuller midrange and bass with sweeter harmonics in these regions. When I closed my eyes and switched from the CS4382 to the Transporter analogue I had the distinct impression that the floor opened up, like I "fell in" - it's hard to describe and I'm not sure why I get that impression but I do. I think I am hearing midrange and bass harmonics that were muffled before. It just doesn't sound as compressed. Anyway, great stuff! The knob is quite neat. Yes, it does make noise from time to time - reminded me of a floppy disk seek noise, but much quieter. There also appears to be a relay somewhere in the unit - you will hear it click on and off as you connect to your wireless network. It clicks on when it's looking for the network, off if it can't find it. BTW another neat thing - it reports the line voltage on its display and on SlimServer. And WOW is the wireless module powerful! SB3, in a location slighly elevated from there, 70-75% signal. Transporter, down a bit from that location, 85-90% signal! Plus it found wireless networks around me that NetStumbler can't find. -- Mark Lanctot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28812 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
