My advice:
Get to a good dealer and listen to some stuff. Don't stop listening
until you find a sound that you really love. Listen a little, but not
much, outside your price range - have something to aspire to. Never
buy on the spot. Always try more than one dealer if you're starting
off.
Don't buy B&O. It looks great, is a joy to operate but the sound is
pants. Buying B&O in Japan would be a tad eccentric :)
40 square meters is about 400 square feet, for the Americans. Don't
get too big a speaker - maybe over 8 inches for the woofer would be
overkill, but that's a very broad brush approach.
Final bit of advice: listen to valve kit. My wife loves the look of my
system, which has allowed me licence to spend more than if I were buying
black boxes... In Japan, you're well served with such products.
