I would recommend a raw battery source needs to be regulated, so my own solution uses an LM317 to step 12v down to 5, and uses a more or less 'LM317 reference implementation' circuit design. Happy to provide details but you could probably find something yourself in electronics publications online. I've posted a photo of the regulator housing. The battery is external, due to the size.... 'Note that you waste a little bit of battery energy as heat.....'
