There is 24-bit material out there: audio off a video DVD is 24-bit, 48
kHz, audio off a DVD-A is 24-bit, 96 kHz.

What I meant was you could go to heroics (i.e. work very hard) to get
24-bit files - you can do this to the WAV files in Audacity, for
example, but since the CD contains no additional information, I don't
believe you'll gain anything.

There are DACs that upsample though - someone else should explain that
to you because I don't know the details.

In fact I may be wrong that you can't gain anything by upsampling from
16-bit to 24-bit, but I believe only expensive DACs can do this. That
qualifies as heroics in my book but there may be something to be
gained.
