Dipoles are generally meant to be placed pretty far away from the back
wall, so the direct sound won't actually be overwhelmed by the
reflected sound. So pulling them away from the wall generally helps a
lot.

Pretty much anything which absorbs sound will help on the wall: a
(full) bookshelf, a tapestry or carpet, etc. 

Compressed fiberglass insulation appears to be a very good thing to
make absorbers out of. Do a search on acoustics and evans-corning 705
or 703.
