I have done this for some time. Using a pack of 4 Sanyo RC2400 NiCd cells, these are at around 5.5V when fully charged, going down to around 4.8V after a couple of hours use. The SB functions perfectly fine in that range. Voltage drop from the 1A load is no problem, these cells are designed for something like 50A continous load. There are many other high current cell types that should work, including NiMh types, just make sure they are quality high discharge cells. As to the sound quality, maybe a little bit better, but not night and day.
