There's a pair of dynaudio 1.3se on audiogon for 1350 right now. Those things are pretty unbelievable.
If you don't mind not having brand new things, going used at that price range will get you wonderful equipment. If you don't mind not getting the current audiophile flavor of the month, even better. I agree with highdudgeon about the spendors as well (I had a pair of s100s for 10 years).
