I've attempted a search on my question, only to find more confusion. I have an Anthem AVM50 (pre-pro) and Anthem MCA 50 amp. Currently, I have all my music (Apple Lossless) on an Intel Mac mini, which is connected to my home theater system via DVI/HDMI and a glass toslink/SPDIF adapter. I only use the Mac as a music server.
I would like to attempt to improve the audio with an external DAC, perhaps the Benchmark or Lavry. However, since the Anthem (pre-pro) will convert the signal (Analog input to digital output 16/44, 16/48, 24/88, 24/96) from the DAC, is this not the best option? What if I use a USB connection instead of the toslink, will the conversion still compromise the audio quality? Reading the glowing reviews of the SB3, it appears this alone may improve the audio from the Mac, however, since the mac is in the theater room, it doesn't appear to give the eyecandy and ease of a Mac front end to select the music. If the improvement were there, I would buy an SB3and/or DAC for critical listening sessions. Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I'm needing to tell Santa before it's to late.
