Last time I decided to try out a new DAC, Digital Village in Barnet were happy to sell me their demo Lucid DA2496 (this was before the Benchmark existed) on the understanding that I could return it if it didn't come up to scratch, or exchange it for a brand new one if I liked it. (I ended up returning for a refund). Maybe you could try asking them if they'd consider the same approach on a Benchmark?
