As you mentioned in your initial posting, you have noticed that there
is no consensus of opinion around here. So let me throw in my own
thoughts.

1. Amplifiers. The best preamp possible is no preamp at all. If the
Squeezebox is going to be your only source, go with just a power amp,
and use the Squeezebox's volume control to adjust listening levels. If
you do this, then you may need some way of limiting the maximum volume
possible. If you also get the Lavry, then you can use its volume
control to set the maximum level. If not, then you might need to get
some passive attenuators.

2. Regarding your choice of speakers. Are you really fixed on these?
It's possible that if you combined the money you would spend on these
speakers plus the Lavry, you might be able to get much better speakers,
which would result in better sound quality, even when using the
Squeezebox DAC (which is pretty good in any case). You mention that the
Stridbeck speakers are very neutral, without any character of their own,
so my guess would be that you might like active professional studio
monitors (which have their own built-in power amps). These kind of
speakers are typically much cheaper than "HiFi" speakers for the same
sound quality. (The downside is that they are not nearly as
good-looking).

Performers -> dozens of mixers and effects -> clipped/hypercompressed
mastering -> you think a few extra ps of jitter matters?
