A high-end DAC will exceed the sound quality of the SB3, which could be revealed in a high-end system. However - it is not clear to me that it is worth the trouble. Instead of going to that much trouble, (getting an SB3 and external DAC,) I think it makes more sense to get a Transporter.
Time is money, and putting together an SB3 with a DAC I liked was not a simple project, as I discovered.
