The other aspect of Religious Wars is that there is as much "perceived
persecution" as there is real persecution. No one phrases sentences in
real life with "this is merely my opinion and you are free to disagree
or agree with it as you see fit; I make no pretense of being the moral
spokesman of the world, and arbiter of all that is truth" prefixing
every statement of opinion...
But once a religious war starts, people see "I like it this way" as
"You are wrong for having your own preferences" and sometimes things
like "try this, it should give you what you want" as some sort of "if
you don't do it my way, you are unfit to live".
(Which is, of course, why I am bored today and adding pointless
disclaimers to some of my more recent posts: I really don't give a
fuzzy rat's ass how people organize their music or whether they think
replaygain is divine inspiration or the tool of Satan...)

For the record: I dislike words like "Soundstage" -- they imply "the
big huge studios outside where they are shooting some lame TV show"...
but I will say that if I listen to the original Interstellar Overdrive,
and other cheap early stereo games ("let's throw EVERYTHING into the
right channel!") that they do sound like they come from beyond the
speakers.... why? Because they end up being too much in, say, my right
ear: more in my right ear.
A trick, sure, but then stereo itself is a trick of the ears. Maybe
some of us are more susceptible to that trick than others.
