Lafayette - there is no good reason why you should be getting drop outs with that signal strength. I had a similar experience though and it turned out to be nothing to do with the wireless but an obscure TCP/IP problem!
Can I suggest you go on to the Beginners forum to sort this out - post details of your computer setup and I'm sure we'll (by which I mean the community) be able to fix this for you.
