Perhaps a wiki that discusses all the issues surrounding use of
balanced power amps is in order. As well as input sensitivity, there
are potential grounding issues when using unbalanced and ungrounded
sources (such as a Squeezebox).

My guess is that they didn't do it because attenuation would raise the
output impedance. As a general rule, balanced outputs are sometimes
used to drive long interconnects, and high output impedances should be
avoided.

I'd be happy to add what I know to a wiki page, but before doing so I'd
like others who have more extensive electronics knowledge (eg. Patrick
Dixon, opaqueice, etc) to review it for possible gaffes. I'm pretty
sure that the voltage divider I describe is safe to use with fairly
short interconnects (say up to about 10 metres), but it does narrow the
gap between source and load impedances, which might not be acceptable
for long cable runs.

Performers -> dozens of mixers and effects -> clipped/hypercompressed
mastering -> you think a few extra ps of jitter matters?
