If you were to 'open' your favorite CD in a waveform editing program, you'd see that most of the waveforms are CLIPPED! It is a known fact that adding 'distortion' makes it sound louder... psychoacoustic mumbo-jumbo starts here! Removing dynamics and pushing the ceiling of 0dBFS (full-scale) is where it's been.
I've been in the recording biz since 1971 and was mastering albums back in 1979 to lacquer. Since then, I've certainly moved into the digital domain and now spend many hours in front of a Mac doing the same thing. There are MANY mastering engineers SCREAMING about the levels on CDs, and there is a fight to bring dynamics BACK into music. BE PATIENT. It will return.
