Read the article carefully: for a given volume setting (well, other than max), the newer firmwares are going to be quieter. The old firmware had very little resolution at the low end: it could go from medium to loud basically.
And humans almost always hear "louder" as "better". As for phase: old firmware accidentally inverted the phase. That was fixed.
