I havn't subscribed to Stereophile in about 10 years mainly because most
of what they review is way above my price range. I'll occasionally
browse through a copy at the bookstore if something catches my eye in
the index. I've been blessed with having grown up through a time when
I've been exposed to Audio Review, Stereo Review, Audio, Fi, and a few
other mags I can't remember off hand. Early on I recognised that
reviews were worded in such a way as to force the reader into reading
between the lines. The reasons were obvious. Not to po potential
advertisers. I remember one time Julian Hirsh described a piece of
equipment this way," Of the many examples of speakers in this price
range, this is one of them".

With Stereophile, I go directly to the description of the component,
usually in the very beginning and then skip to the last paragraph for a
summation. Everything in between is usually drivel. Honestly, sometimes
I thing they get paid by the word. Occasionally the review is somewhat
amusing, either intentionally or not. The real meat is hidden in the
technical measurements. That guy, I can't rememberhis name offhand,
pulls no punches. He will tell you where the component ranks in
comparison with other similar components. If you know how to read the
graphs and charts so much the better. For those who contend that graphs
and charts will not tell you how a component sounds, they at least give
a SCIENTIFIC baseline. If you take the time to correlate that data to
what you actually hear, it can save a great deal of time on determining
which components to audition.

As to the Transporter itself, the essence of what I've seen so far is
that if used in a system that sounds good TO YOU, it sounds among the
best. If put in a system that does not synergise well, it might not
sound good TO YOU. My splitting hairs might be your night and day and
visa versa. YMMV, you might not be even driving.
