Personally I want the most transparent representation of what is on the
medium I am listening to as is practical.

It's not really possible to hear 'what the engineer intended' as the
engineer is mixing/mastering for multiple systems, if he's worth his
salt.

Many studios I've been in have multiple monitors... And then there is
always the trip out to the car to hear it there!

We'd all own at least one pair of Yamaha NS10s and a valve-powered
mixing desk if we wanted to hear what the engineers were hearing ;)

The engineers are usually (although not always, in ye olden days they
just 'recorded' and be damned for instance!) trying to maintain a
tricky balancing act in representing the music as well as possible
within the limitations of the chosen media, taking into account
multiple scenarios for playback.
