Interesting thread.
I mod items that have not been mentioned yet: railroad models!
It usually consists of adding an extra detail part or two to a
locomotive from the box, but it can be as extensive as more or less
completely rebuilding it or combining it with another model
("kitbashing").
Why do I do it? That's what's more applicable to modding in general:
1. I can get an accurate model of the exact prototype, something which
is otherwise impossible. I guess in audio this would translate to
"better sound", i.e. something closer to what it was you wanted.
What's not equivalent is what the OP touched on: why not get spend more
and get a better audio player? In model railroading this isn't always
possible because there's such huge variety in the prototypes. It isn't
"do I choose between X and Y?" it's "do I choose between X or nothing?"
2. I get a greater sense of ownership and pride in the item, rather
than just taking it out of the box and using it, mine is unique. This
may or may not apply in audio, it's only do-it-yourself mods that would
apply.
3. I gain a greater understanding of the item.
4. I learn new skills.
5. It's FUN! (I shop for model railroad detail parts like some women
shop for shoes: "ooh! These cast handrail stanchions are so cool! I
gotta have 'em!" I've got a whole box full of these items for eventual
use, probably $200 worth. Equivalent to a rack of shoes sitting in a
closet I guess!)
