Yet recently I was well convinced to go with NAS, just because I never
paid attention how cheap desktops these days are. I seems one can get
more of everything (memory, power, etc) for money by getting with those
Dell or HP workstations, especially if you catch it on sale...

On the other hand:
- software RAID is terribly slow (like 3 times slower) then the one
with hardware controller
- it's not clear if you can achieve network data transfer rate as of
aforementioned Thecus with that configuration running XP
- workstation required much more maintenance, NAS requires nothing,
plug it in and you're set to go
- having XP may be as advantage just as disadvantage over simple
specialized Linux based NAS OS

Conclusion: if you need it only for SlimServer then all above doesn't
matter, but it's to be used as a file server as well then cheap
workstation may have severe performance problems comparing to good NAS.
