Well my experience has been the (sort of) opposite. I used to use a small blue disk thing that sat on the CD's in my CD player. It definitely improved the sound. When I started ripping I tried it in my CD-ROM drive. The wav's were identical (bit for bit) and BOTH sounded like the CD player WITH the disk in place.
