And so am I. But I have the idea :) I don't mind to repeat again.
I'm sure we both understand it has nothing to do with music
reproduction. It's all about mere accessing your digital audio data.
With a good optical drive in your player, and good CD you're unlikely
to find any difference. With less then good CD you may have readability
issues, which still doesn't mean you'll hear it. Once it ripped on HDD
you're just fine.

As for whether to connect your DAC directly or thorough SB is a totally
separate matter. I wouldn't mess with direct connection, and I'm all for
taking SPDIF interface as far as possible from the computer box. It's
just simpler - less issues to handle. However, it IS possible to
connect directly and to have results just as good as from SB or your CD
player. You just have to know a lot more about choosing proper hardware,
treating RF/EMI interferences, and software (meaning ways to avoid OS to
intervene). Pro workstations work this way.
