During high school and part of college I spent some time listening to
the Grateful Dead. I recently read an article about their official live
recordings in Stereophile (of all places), and my curiosity was piqued.


It turns out that you can download full-res FLAC files for entire
concerts, without DRM, directly from Dead site. The price is about $20,
which is the approximately same as the retail price for the CD sets
(there are usually three CDs for each concert). 

Six concerts and 48 hours of downloading later, I'm very happy with the
result. The quality is very good, and there is something really cool
about downloading a high-quality, fully tagged album directly to your
hard drive and playing it on the Squeezebox or Transporter. 

If only more bands did this...
