Don't you have to install special drivers for windows to avoid re-sampling everything to 48kHz, and make sure windows doesn't make any system noises while you're listening? Sounds like more work than installing SS on a healthy computer to me, but I suppose not all computers are healthy.
I can't get over the fact that USB has power in the cable, but I suppose firewire does too and it's used by pros. Maybe you can find one that doesn't run on the USB power.
