I wasn't trying to argue that point really, because I still think
you're right. These companies have to submit their designs and
financial records to MS to get them approved, and I doubt MS would
leave the hardware digital loop open. I wouldn't be surprised if they
try to shut down the software loop, once people start calling tech
support. 

The block diagram of a receiver* looked, to an untrained eye, similar
to how the Sb manipulates the digital input for volume control, which
is why I brought it up originally.

Modifying an ebay receiver might be a fun experiment, so if anyone has
suggestions/ideas for tapping such a stream and routing to a S/PDIF
out, that would be interesting.
