i like the idea of the solid state recorder. i used a high-end minidisc recorder a few years ago in amsterdam to record some very good musicians playing under a large arch in a park. just recently, i was listening to my music collection on random in the background, and i heard an impressive sounding live accordion trio playing some organ fugue, and i didn't remember through most of the song that i had originally captured it! there were some quiet passages of the song when you can hear the spinning of the disc, even though the mics were several feet away.
