Yep, Apple Lossless, like I said. It seems this is a known bug with the current release. As an experimented, I upgraded again and the pop/crackles came back. Interestingly, it does not happen if you forward between songs.
At any rate, the bug is on SD's radar screen. Hopefully they will realize there are more than a few Mac users out here and fix it.
