I have received mine as well and I am experiencing exactly the same
thing! First: absolutely rubbish, but after 100 hours there is
significant improvement. Sound is opening and music is getting more
involving, but not yet even near to my ex-cd-player, Arcam CD33.

I hope that it will get better and better over the time.
